Wheels for September 16
by John Kanelis

Bob Hattan, Texas Master Gardener considers anyone that nurtures a plant(s), a gardener. He enjoys gardening for a number of reasons, it's a great stress buster and he likes the end results. Now is the time to plant! As the weather begins to cool and the rains come, new plants can firmly take root before winter. Take the time to build the soil with nutrients by composting and review your gardens to make plans for the Spring. Fall is also a great time to broadcast grass seed for a lush lawn.

Consider adding some edible portions to your garden or help with the community gardens that seem to be popping up. For more information on what works in Amarillo or to visit a Rain Forest in town, consult the staff of the Amarillo Botanical Gardens.

Thanks to Lane Boyd for another great program.

Take some time to check out the travels of Kelly Combs, our district's ambassadorial scholar, who is living in Morocco. http://www.ridistrict5730.org/ambassadorial_scholarship_reports.htm

A moment of silence was observed for the passing of John Zimmerman.

Our very own Kathy Cornett drew the ticket for the Rotary Foundation pot, but missed the Ace of Spades. John Kanelis won the Melvin Edes' legendary beef jerky. The Foundation pot is now more than $500.

We'd like to thank John Kanelis, Bob Russell, Larry Castor, Marilyn Ault, Lea Ann Fulton, Renee Wilson, Rotarians, and Brent Barbee and Jerry Neufeld of the Amarillo PD for the Rotary Holdups this summer!

Be sure to attend the next meeting. Our program will be our own Bill Summerhill, who will tell us about Ascension Academy.

And thanks this week to go to: Thomas Woodman, Amarillo Opera, who sang the National Anthem in lieu of a song leader; John Kanelis, invocater; Larry Offerdahl, introducer of guests and visiting Rotarians; Dale Bippus, Bill Archinal, and Jeff Neely, greeters; Gary Mitchell, ticket seller.
